Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mariam al-Sadiq sent messages to her counterparts around the world condemning the "military coup" in her country and the detention of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and ministers in the transitional civilian government.

In her message, al-Sadiq vowed “to resist the military coup in Sudan with all peaceful means”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

- The legitimate head of the government, Abdalla Hamdok, and members of his government are still held in an unknown location - the minister said in the message.

On Monday, Sudan’s ruling military council announced a state of emergency and dissolved the transitional sovereign council and the government, hours after detaining Hamdok and ministers in his civilian government.

The council also suspended some provisions of the constitutional document outlining the political transition in Sudan.

After a failed military coup last month, deep tensions erupted between the military and the civilian administration in Sudan amid recent rival protests in Khartoum.

Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian authorities, which oversaw the transition period until elections slated for 2023, as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change coalition.
